Glucosamine Sulfate Comparison

Last updated: September 1, 2010

When looking for a glucosamine or joint supplement for your dog, you will notice two types available: "Glucsamine sulfate" and "Glucosamine HCI" (hydrochloride). Glucosamine sulfate is the most researched type of glucosamine and studied for animals.

Your vet may carry a recommended supplement containing glucosamine sulfate in his office. If you do not get your supplement from your vet, make sure the product you buy is from a trusted, quality manufacturer—we recommend RJX by Nusentia (manuf. coupon: glucodog). Glucosamine hydrochloride (HCI) is a cheaper, newer type of glucosamine being offered for pets. While it may offer some benefits, we recommend sticking with glucosamine sulfate since it is more widely researched and used.

Another Tip...

While the benefits of glucosamine sulfate are well known, it is also well known that when combining glucosamine sulfate with other ingredients such as chondroitin, MSM, or Omega-3 fatty acids, the results of the glucosamine sulfate are more effective. Chondroitin works to absorb the joint fluid, MSM works to support inflammation issues, and the fatty acids assist with inflammation and healthy tissues.

Glucosamine sulfate is a healthy and safe alternative to pharmaceutical and prescription drugs for your pet. Dosage for glucosamine sulfate is listed lower on this page.
